The electric Ford F-150 Lightning has been treated to a range of off-road modifications – but don’t expect it to come to showrooms.
Ford’s performance division has continued its charge of turning its electric models into wild demonstrator vehicles, uncovering a jacked-up and off-road focused version of the F-150 Lightning pick-up.
Dubbed the F-150 Lightning Switchgear, this is no ordinary Ford pick-up – rather one with the go-fast bits from the US car giant’s off-road performance arm, all while retaining its creature comforts.
Built in collaboration with professional drifter Vaughn Gittin Junior’s ‘RTR’ (or Ready to Rock) company, the F-150 Lightning Switchgear’s aggressive stance comes courtesy of 37-inch tyres within wider wheel arches and new carbon-composite bodywork – such as the sides of its bed and rear bumper cover.
Under the skin there are now Fox off-road shocks – giving up to 28cm of wheel travel at the front and 33cm at the rear – which are connected to a custom double-wishbone front suspension setup, with a multi-link layout for the back axle.
There are no changes to the F-150’s dual electric motors, which provide outputs up to 433kW and 1050Nm, with power supplied by a 131kWh battery pack.
Inside, the F-150’s cabin now incorporates a half-roll-cage, five leather Recaro sports seats – each with a six-point racing harness – and what appears to be a hydraulic handbrake, making it easier to get the back end sideways when off-road.
Unfortunately there are no plans to put the F-150 Lightning Switchgear into production as an electric sibling to the petrol-powered Raptor, though it will join Ford’s fleet of battery-powered show cars – alongside the Transit Custom SuperVan, Mustang Cobra Jet 1800 and the Mustang Mach-E 1400.
