South Australia’s RAA launches mobile emergency electric vehicle charging service

The service enables stranded EV drivers to get to their nearest charging location if they run out of power.

The Royal Automobile Association of South Australia (RAA) has introduced a mobile emergency electric vehicle (EV) charging service.

The service has been launched this week on a six-month trial basis and looks to solve range anxiety concerns for electric car drivers.

Based out of a Toyota HiAce van, the service can restore enough charge in an EV for stranded drivers to reach the closest charging station.

The RAA says the 7kW ‘Type 2’ mobile charger is able to add enough electricity for 10km of driving range in less than 15 minutes.

Based at RAA’s Mile End site, this van will reportedly be dispatched to stranded members with EVs in the metro area as needed.

“From this week, South Australian EV drivers will have the confidence that if they do run out of charge on the road, we’ll be there to rescue them with our emergency mobile charging device,” said RAA Chief Executive Officer Nick Reade in a media statement.

Alongside the mobile charging service, the RAA has also launched its first electric patrol van.

This Peugeot E-Partner – identifiable from petrol patrol vans via its green accents at the rear, and unique stickers – is also with the RAA for a six-month trial, but will reportedly inform the long-term transition for the patrol fleet.

Approximately 80 per cent of the RAA’s “scope one” emissions (which come from sources directly owned by the organisation) are produced by the patrol fleet – something the organisation is hoping to reduce with electric vans.
