North America’s most-watched motorsport series wants to shake its image of being a sport for good ole’ boys from the South by putting its stars on screens globally – thanks to Netflix.
NASCAR – the most-watched motorsport series in the US – will be the latest racing category to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the sport via an online streaming service, with a five-episode series coming to Netflix later this month.
Titled NASCAR: Full Speed, the docu-series follows nine drivers through the 10-race ‘Playoffs’ to close out the season, as the stars fight each other in a knockout format to take the title.
In addition to nine of the sport’s most popular drivers – such as 2021 Champion Kyle Larson, three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin and eventual 2023 victor Ryan Blaney – appearing in front of the camera, two-time Daytona 500 winner and Hall of Fame driver Dale Earnhardt Jr served as the executive producer of the series.
Unfortunately this means the series likely won’t show New Zealand’s Shane van Gisbergen winning the first NASCAR street race in Chicago, which saw the Kiwi become the first driver in 60 years to win on debut – and eventually leading the three-time Supercars champion to head to the US for 2024.
It’s not the first time NASCAR has appeared on Netflix, following the release of a limited series called RACE: Bubba Wallace which documented Darrell ‘Bubba’ Wallace’s 2020 and 2021 seasons as the only African-American in the sport.
Netflix’s Drive to Survive series has been attributed to a substantial increase in attendance and viewership of Formula One races since the first season was released in early 2019 – turning the sport’s heroes into megastars.
NASCAR: Full Speed will be released on Netflix on 30 January 2024 US time – likely coming to Australian screens on January 31 local time.
