Here’s Our Imagination Of What The Porsche 911’s Electrified Future Would Look Like

The Porsche 911 nameplate has always been iconic, although so far, it is gas only. With the brand inching towards full electrification after many years of putting the idea on the back burner, it leads many of us to wonder: Could the 911 turn hybrid or even fully electric? Porsche has denied this plenty of times, although looking back ten years, the brand also claimed it wouldn’t become solely EVs. Things change. Therefore, it’s worth speculating a *tad* about what this model could look like had it been electric or if it had ever been released that way.

To give you some backstory, Porsche, In July of 2023, had confirmed it would be turning its entire fleet electric, minus the sole survivor of the shift: 911. That had people a bit confused, especially because the 911 nameplate is one of Porsche’s most notable and popular. Turning everything else into an EV and leaving the 911 nameplate in the past felt like an odd move at the time, and it feels even more strange in 2024. Our renderings below give you some insight into what could be for the Porsche 911 EV and what features *possibly* could be included with it. Stay tuned!

Perhaps A Pipe Dream: Porsche 911 E

• You see a more sharp, striking design in the electric 911, with sharper headlights, a multi-tier grille, and increased aerodynamics.

Although unconfirmed, the Porsche 911 EV would be the final nail in the coffin for gas-loving sportscar drivers. In many ways, that explains why Porsche is sluggish to make any major changes to the nameplate, as well as transform the long-standing icon into something a bit more eco-conscious. As you can see by our renderings, the Porsche 911 E doesn’t lose its cool (at all) but actually looks better as an electric model.

You see the same aerodynamic frame, low-profile design, and sexiness that Porsche has long been known for. The only thing majorly different is your 911 EV would be just that: electric. Swapping out the clunky engine for two or so electric motors could give you a bit more storage in the front and back of your 911, plus mean faster acceleration, handling, and cleaner performance.

What Changes In A Porsche 911 E

Adding to our above point, your redesigned Porsche 911 E (per TopSpeed’s in-house renderings) looks a bit sharper than current gas-powered releases. Most importantly, we would see the rounded body of the 911 move to a refined, ‘sharp’ aesthetic, with striking LED headlamps, a low, multi-tiered front grille, and plenty more as you move into the configuration of your sportscar. Powertrain aside, an all-electric 911 would mean *possible* increases to your cargo space, as most EVs boast a “frunk” or front truck in conjunction with one in the back. As small as this vehicle is, more storage space for groceries and everyday essentials makes a big difference. Even for race car drivers.

Again, this car’s history and evolution are fascinating, so adding electricity to the mix won’t cause that much of a stir.

Aerodynamic Overhaul: The key design changes in our Porsche 911 E include things like the reformatted body, the absence of a tailpipe, and a refreshed grille for enhanced aerodynamics.

A Hybrid Or Plug-in Hybrid 911 Could Be Offered Before A Full-blown EV

• Porsche could easily introduce a PHEV or standard hybrid version of the 911.
• There will likely be a slow move from gas to electric, even for this nameplate.

One thing to be wary of when the eventual electrification of Porsche happens is that not all these vehicles have to immediately become EVs. What Porsche has done is slowly go from hybrid to EV throughout its fleet, with models including current PHEVs, Panamera, and Cayenne. Porsche’s ‘E-Hybrids’ have been doing well across the markets they are in, plus the Taycan continues to be a popular sedan for eco-conscious drivers in the luxury sector.

Adding a true sports car to the electric or even semi-electric fleet of vehicles would be a smart move on Porsche’s end, although they choose to tread lightly when it comes to the 911 nameplate. It’s not unlikely for Porsche to make the eventual announcement of a hybrid/plug-in hybrid 911 model, even if that means they continue to be a fuel-based trim. You can sometimes have your cake and eat it, too, even if that means Porsche rolls out optional hybrid powertrains and then electric ones.

As Long As The Porsche 911 E Purrs, Do We Mind It Turning Electric?

• With powerful enough battery tech and dual motors, the 911 E could blow the current version out of the water.
• Porsche Taycan models offer a single 79.2-93.4 kWh 723 V lithium-ion battery using a lightweight 800-volt system.

Even if Porsche and the 911 nameplate have been powerhouses in the sportscar markets for decades, that doesn’t mean innovation has to be a bad thing. Looking at our renderings, you see the future of the 911 sportscar doesn’t need to be dismal, especially with the right upgrades.

The 911, although famous for many reasons, needs a redesign. Sharper lines, aerodynamic framing, batteries with enough power and range to impress, and added storage/passenger space are all things we COULD experience if this model switches to electric. As a gas version, this model is fast, so electricity won’t change that.

The Porsche 911 E Could Use A Similar Battery To Taycan

Adding to our earlier point of Porsche already having EV technology available, the 911 E could use similar batteries or the same battery as the current Taycan release. What makes this theory interesting is that the Taycan boasts a lightweight, 800-volt battery with a gross capacity of 93.4 kWh. Additionally, the Taycan and Taycan 4S are equipped as standard with the Performance Battery with a gross energy content of 79.2 kWh​​​​​​.

You also have dual motors in the Taycan, which we’d expect to ring true in a 911 E. If we had our way, there would be four motors inside, much like how Rivian allows the upgraded option in its EVs.

The 911 EV May Be On The Horizon

• Porsche has bold electrification plans for 2030.
• The 911 remains the sole survivor of Porsche’s electric vision.

As we enter a new chapter of electric driving across the spectrum, sportscar brands like Porsche know their time is limited to continue building gas-powered models. With the brand heavily focusing on hybrid, PHEV, and battery-powered configurations for models, 2030 will mark a nearly 180 in terms of brand image and mission.

As per Porsche, you can expect its fleet to be nearly all-electric (minus 911) by the next decade. Models like the Taycan already use electricity to move, as do new releases, including the 2024 Macan. We’re already witnessing this company jump from fuel to battery power, just at a slow, steady pace.

The 911 EV is not impossible, nor do we expect Porsche to stick to its guns on maintaining the nameplate as a gas-only vehicle. Porsche could announce this sports car with an optional PHEV powertrain first, and then an eventual full switch to battery operation. Electrification is happening, people; why don’t we embrace it!?
