This week at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), a Vietnamese automaker is looking to break into the coveted pickup truck segment and revealed the VinFast Wild concept.
VinFast, an electric vehicle manufacturer, launched its first vehicle in the U.S. last year to very poor reviews. And as it expands its lineup in the States, VinFast says this pickup concept exemplifies “VinFast’s commitment to broadening its product range and promoting sustainable mobility by making smart, safe, exciting electric vehicles accessible to everyone.”
While we haven’t had the opportunity to test any VinFast products yet, from the reviews we’ve read, VinFast might want to focus on quality and reliability before broadening its product range.
But we digress.
Because this is ostensibly a concept, VinFast has released few details. But here’s what we do know.
VinFast Wild is midsized
With full-sized electric trucks like the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T already on sale in the U.S., VinFast smartly takes aim at an untapped segment: the midsized electric truck. Overall length is 209 inches, and the width is 79 inches. For reference, this is about 4 inches shorter and 2 inches wider than the 2024 Toyota Tacoma.
It also incorporates a power-folding midgate (think: Chevrolet Silverado EV), which would expand bed length from 5 feet to 8 feet with the rear seats folded down.
VinFast says the exterior design is inspired by the “flowing motion of a superhero’s cape in the wind.” It also has digital side mirrors, which, if this vehicle does come Stateside, won’t make it into a production vehicle due to federal restrictions.
Is the VinFast Wild for reals?
Though this truck is called a “concept,” the language in the very brief press release seems to indicate the the VinFast Wild is bound for production.
“This is not just a new product in our offering – it showcases our aspiration to venture into the fast-paced and thriving electric pickup truck market,” said Tran Mai Hoa, Deputy CEO of Sales and Marketing for VinFast Global.
The bottom line
The Vietnamese automaker is off to a shaky start in the U.S. but seems determined to make a go of it. The five-passenger VF8 is currently on sale with the VF6, VF7 and VF9 slated to come soon. With its presence at CES, VinFast is planting its feet and standing its ground. But with just 237 units registered in its first 8 months of sales, it’s TBD whether VinFast will keep its footing in the U.S. or whether the VinFast Wild will ever see the light of day.
