Ducati Is Not Planning Any Additional Single-Cylinder Models After The Hypermotard
According to Ducati’s head of design (Andrea Ferraresi), the Italian bikemaker has no plans to whip up any additional single-cylinder motorcycles in the near future. The Hypermotard 698 will remain the sole flag-bearer of Ducati’s new powerhouse.
“Until a few years ago we only had twins, and now we have a single and V4 engines. Engine development for us is a must. Everything starts from there. We are all in love with this single-cylinder engine. It’s half of a Panigale Superquadro, so it’s a superb engine. At the moment, we are not forecasting to use it in other models, but never say never. We all know that the Supermono is in the heart and the brain of many people. At the moment, it’s in that bike [Hypermotard], but let’s see in the future.” said Ferraresi.
It’s a statement that simmers down our excitement for a one-of-a-kind single-pot Panigale–the modern-day rendition of the iconic Supermono race bike from the early 1990s. It’s an idea enough to give enthusiasts butterflies, which also makes sense from a market standpoint. After all, middleweight sport bikes are all the riot nowadays. This is a segment Ducati hasn’t quite encashed on since the SuperSport 950 and Panigale V2 are nowhere near the middleweight price bracket. Not to mention, the new 659cc mill’s output would position it right in between the 72-HP Yamaha YZF-R7 and the new 82-HP Suzuki GSX-8R.

Speaking of the engine, the 659cc, single-cylinder engine is derived from the 1,285 cc Superquadro of the 1299 Panigale. It has liquid cooling, a stonking 13.1:1 compression ratio, desmodromic valves, and an over-10,000 RPM redline to produce 77.5 horsepower and 46.4 pound-feet. These make it the world’s most powerful Euro-5-compliant single-cylinder engine. Slap on a race exhaust and the output further increases to 84.5 ponies.
All this doesn’t come at the cost of reliability either. The Mono has an oil change interval of every 9,320 miles, while the valve clearance is needed no sooner than 18,641 miles. In case you want to experience it, feel free to get yourself a Hypermotard 698. Prices start from $12,995.
