An electric car has topped the new vehicle sales charts in Australia for the first time among buyers who bought privately – rather than through a business or fleet.
The favourite new car among private buyers in Australia last year was electric – the Tesla Model Y family SUV – for the first time, new data shows.
The Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux have led overall new-vehicle sales for close to a decade, when sales from all buyer types – including business and trade fleets, governments and rental-car companies.
But when only private buyers – who paid for their car and registered it in their name – are counted, the Tesla Model Y electric SUV topped the charts ahead of the MG ZS and Toyota RAV4 SUVs.
The Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux utes remain in the Top 10, but they fall from first and second overall – to fourth and eighth respectively.
In 2022 the Mazda CX-5 was the favourite passenger car or SUV among private buyers – ahead of the Toyota RAV4 and MG ZS respectively – but fell to fifth place in 2023.
Excluding business and rental fleets shows Australians are still interested in traditional passenger cars, as the Hyundai i30 hatch and sedan ranked sixth among private buyers last year – and the Tesla Model 3 electric sedan placed ninth.
The Toyota Corolla – which had its 10-year winning streak in the overall passenger-car sales race ended by the Hyundai i30 last year – finished in 20th place, as nearly 60 per cent of sales in 2023 were to governments, business fleets or rental-car companies.
More than 70 per cent of Tesla Model Y deliveries were to private buyers, according to data shared by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), the peak body for new-car makers in Australia.
It is despite starting from $70,000 drive-away – close to three times the price of the most popular variant of the MG ZS small SUV, the $23,990 drive-away Excite base model.
Meanwhile just 22.5 per cent of Toyota HiLux utes sold went to private buyers – and 27.1 per cent of Ford Ranger utes sold.
