2025 Isuzu D-Max to gain new 2.2-litre mild-hybrid diesel engine – report

The Isuzu D-Max and MU-X are in line for a new engine a few years into their life cycles, with mild-hybrid technology.

The 2025 Isuzu D-Max ute and its SUV sibling, the MU-X, may be in line to receive a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine with mild-hybrid assistance as part of its major mid-life update.

According to a report from Thailand’s Headlight magazine, Isuzu plans to introduce the all-new 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine in the D-Max ute from 2025, complete with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system – with the MU-X to follow.

The new 2.2-litre engine has been developed from the 1.9-litre turbo-diesel engine, introduced to the Australian D-Max range in January 2022. As reported in December 2023, the MU-X will also receive the 1.9-litre engine in 2024.

It’s unclear at this stage whether the 2.2-litre mild-hybrid engine will replace either the 1.9-litre or 3.0-litre engines in the Isuzu Ute range, or if it will be offered to buyers as a third option on its models.

In Australia, the entry-level 1.9-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine produces 110kW and 350Nm, while the range-topping 3.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine puts out 140kW and 450Nm.

According to the report, the 2.2-litre engine will utilise the mild-hybrid system to reduce turbo lag during take-off, as well as providing additional performance in short bursts – such as accelerating up hills or overtaking.

Like the HiLux, the report claims Isuzu’s mild-hybrid system will consist of an electric motor mounted to the engine via a belt – doubling as a starter motor and generator.

Isuzu will launch its first electric ute in Norway in 2025, with the Thai – and possibly Australian – markets to follow, however it could be 2027 before it goes on sale locally.
