The Latest Dirt On The Yamaha YZF-R9

[ad_1]

Summary

  • The Yamaha YZF-R9 is rumored to come in two variants, standard and SP.
  • It will be powered by Yamaha’s 889cc, three-cylinder engine.
  • There is no official timeline for the release of the Yamaha YZF-R9.

It’s officially 2024, and another year has gone by without an official update on the Yamaha YZF-R9. Yes, we’ve seen trademark and logo filings for the motorcycle , but Team Blue has yet to confirm/deny its middleweight sports bike. As we continue to wait, there’s new dirt on the motorcycle straight from Yamaha’s hometown, Japan.

It comes from the trusted local site Young Machine, which is usually bang on about its predictions. To jog your memory, the website predicted the arrival of the new Honda CB1000 and the Yamaha XSR900 GP, both of which came true in 2023. So here’s what you need to know.

According to the site’s sources, the Yamaha YZF-R9 will come in two variants–standard and SP. The primary difference between them would be the underpinnings and livery, just like the new MT-09 variants. For reference, the MT-09 SP boasts fully adjustable KYB forks and Ohlins monoshock over the standard version’s lower-spec suspension. It also brings Brembo Stylema calipers in place of the Nissin brakes.

Barring this, the Japanese site suggests the YZF-R9 SP will feature distinct styling than the standard R9. The key change is said to be the inclusion of MotoGP-derived aerodynamic wings up top, alongside a bespoke livery. If so, the R9 SP would be the first middleweight sports bike with wings. Heck, it’d even become the first R-badged Yamaha with wings–after all, not even the current-spec YZF-R1 has them.

The YZF-R9 Will Draw Power From Yamaha’s CP3 Engine

Coming to performance, the YZF-R9 will employ Yamaha’s 889cc, three-cylinder engine. The engine is good for 117 horsepower and 68.6 pound-feet on the MT-09 and XSR900 GP, all of which reach the wheel via a six-speed transmission. If the R9 retains these numbers, it’d slot right between the 72-HP YZF-R7 and the near-200-HP YZF-R1. Also, the sports bike would be more powerful than the Aprilia RS 660 and Honda CBR650R, but a fair bit down from OG supersports like the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R and the new Honda CBR600RR.

Other notable details suggested by Young Machine include:

  • Deltabox/perimeter chassis
  • 17-inch spin-forged wheels
  • New subframe for sportier geometry
  • Aggressive riding triangle (clip-on handlebars and raised footpegs)
  • Fully faired design in line with the R7 and R1

As promising as all this sounds, there’s no official word on when the YZF-R9 will become a reality. The Japanese site suggests it’d debut as a MY25 motorcycle in November this year, which is still a fair bit away. We can’t help but agree with the timeline since Yamaha has already announced its 2024 lineup worldwide. Nevertheless, whenever it’s out, the R9 will have a long list of rivals.
