The GMC Hummer EV is one of the most impressive electric vehicles on the market. Its origins are of course rooted in the original Hummer H1, one of the biggest and most brutal-looking SUVs we’ve ever seen. The Hummer made a name for itself with its military version, the Humvee, but the production version was almost as rugged. YouTuber Junkyard Digs decided that the best way to see how tough a Hummer H1 is was to fire a load of bullets at it.

Not only did they do that but following the massive attack on the Hummer, they decided to see if they could make the large SUV run again. The day before the team shot it, the Hummer was running and driving so the aim was to revive it and inspect the damage done to the vehicle. The amount of bullets fired at the Humvee is significant as not many vehicles would live to tell another day. The YouTube video description says that several thousand rounds hit the SUV, so a lot of work will be needed to get this Hummer back on the road again.

Following the shoot-up, the team inspected the Hummer and straight away it was clear there was no power coming from the SUV. The hood took a lot of damage, and one of the YouTubers says that a lot of .50 caliber incendiary rounds hit the Hummer at the front. Some of the rounds cut through the springs of the Hummer, and the interior is completely gutted. The seats have bullet holes ripped through them the headliner took a lot of damage and all the windows are in pieces as well.

The team opens the hood of the Hummer to inspect the damage to the engine. As you would imagine, there is a lot of damage. The radiators have are all blown out of their positions, and the battery has suffered a huge amount of damage.

A lot of leaks are present, which are either oil or coolant. Junkyard Digs asked a few other YouTubers present at the shooting event if it will run again, and there are different opinions as to whether the Hummer will. But many believe that the Junkyard Digs team can get it running again.

The video also shows the team discussing how they will tackle the rebuilding of the Hummer and how they will get it to run again. The battery will of course need replacing, and there is a lot of fluid that has poured out of the SUV.

Junkyard Digs Begin Repairing The Hummer

The first task is to take ruined components such as the battery out of the Hummer for replacement, along with other vital components. After that, the Hummer needs to move out of its resting spot but the bullets have done a lot of damage to the transmission and driveshafts. Getting the vehicle into neutral becomes a huge struggle, and the team eventually gives up. They do however get some electrical systems working and the lights on, while more impressively, the radio still works.

With those systems restored, the Hummer goes into neutral and there is even a low-tire pressure warning coming on. With the Hummer now in neutral, it can break free from where it was sitting. The windshield wipers are also shot to bits but they still work and move, and they no longer have control over them and they are now on. A look at the back reveals the taillights still work, and one of the headlights and the left blinker still function. While they look underneath the Hummer again, the team finds out that the starter is now split in half.

This will make firing up the Hummer incredibly difficult. The goal isn’t to get the SUV to drive necessarily but to see if they can fire the engine up and get it to turn over. The saving grace is components like the fuse box and the main engine block have survived, and there isn’t even a scratch on the main block. The diesel tank for the Hummer escaped with a solitary bullet hole, but when the starter came out, the damage was significant. A new starter is then sourced, with the hope the Hummer will now finally crank.

Amazingly, after taking so much damage, the team can get the Hummer to fire up and get running again. Before it was fired up, many of the wires and connections were also discovered as destroyed, so more fixing and tweaking took place to get the SUV running again. But after connecting a particular wire, the engine coughs a bit. Not helping the engine’s cause was that the crank sensor was pretty much destroyed in the shoot-up.

The Hummer Will Undergo A Full Repair

The Junkyard Digs team tried several times to fire up the Hummer. Each time, the sounds were pretty horrible and the diesel engine makes some horrible sounds as it backfires. A quick look below the Hummer reveals a lot of leaking fluids. The team doesn’t give up in the latter portion of the video and is trying hard to get the Hummer to fire and run for more than just a few seconds. However, despite their struggles, they reveal that Matt, one of the YouTubers in attendance, will take the Hummer for a full repair on his channel, Off The Ranch. So, apparently, there is still some life left in this devasted SUV.
