2024 GMC Sierra, Chevy Silverado split roof causes stop sale

[ad_1]

Production for the 2024 model year has barely begun, and General Motors has issued a stop sale on 2024 trucks due to a GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado split roof defect. Trucks affected include the GMC Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 as well as the Chevy Silverado 1500, 2500 and 3500.

What’s up with the GMC Sierra, Chevy Silverado split roof?

Essentially GM has noted there are certain trucks that may have a split roof panel on the passenger side. According to a manufacturer communication, dealers are supposed to inspect the panel and MIG weld the split if necessary.

The manufacturer communication was issued on November 20, 2023, and it states that 3,067 vehicles are affected. According to the communication, the “stop delivery” was first issued on October 19. It also states after the inspection and repair, the vehicle could then be delivered to the customer.

When we reached out to GM for clarification of the stop sale and information on where the trucks were built, we only received the same company line given to every other publication:

We can confirm a small number of Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups may have been built with a roof panel split defect. A stop-sale is in place as the impacted vehicles are identified and repaired.”

So, we don’t know which factory these trucks came out of or how the imperfection may have occurred. Nor do we know when the stop sale will end.

The manufacturer communication on the NHTSA website shows this image of what the split side panel looks like.

How involved are the repairs?

The repair procedure calls for the dealers to remove the passenger side roof panel joint finish molding and look for any cracks. If no crack is observed, no further action is needed. But the repair itself will involve removing and replacing the side airbag, repairing any water intrusion, welding the split and repainting the entire outer roof panel.

What’s new for 2024?

Both the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado get minor updates for 2024. Think new packaging, special editions and wider option availability. The Silverado’s engine gets a new name (TurboMax), and the ZR2 has an available Turbo diesel. The Sierra AT4X will get a standard diesel engine, and there are new power retractable assist steps on the Denali, Denali Ultimate, AT4 and AT4X. Both trucks will also get available active exhaust.

The bottom line

Other than the fact that the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado split roof exists and there’s a stop sale, we don’t have too many details. So, if you’re waiting for your 2024 model, you might have to wait a little longer. We just don’t know how much longer.
