Key Takeaways
- Doug DeMuro and friends attempt to set quick lap times on a track while avoiding damage to their cars, including a Porsche Carrera GT.
- The Lamborghini Murcielago’s size and weight make it unlikely to achieve a sub-2 minute lap time.
- The Porsche Boxster Spyder 981 is the fastest car of the day, proving that power doesn’t guarantee quick lap times.
The best sports cars generally perform exceptionally well on the track, but what happens if you take four inexperienced drivers and have them do their best on said track? Doug DeMuro, from the YouTube channel of the same name, pits himself against three of his friends in their cars on a track day to see who is the fastest. Not only are they fighting for the quickest lap time, but they’re also trying not to destroy their cars.
The cars used in this event consist of a 981 Porsche Boxster Spyder, a Porsche Carrera GT, a Ford GT, an E39 BMW M5, and a Lamborghini Murcielago. Doug is also particularly nervous about the Porsche Carrera GT given its $1 million plus price tag. While not all of these are considered to be supercars, neither of them are by any means slow. So, let’s find out what happened and who had the best time of the day.

Doug DeMuro’s 10 Coolest Car Reviews Of 2023 So Far
Doug DeMuro has reviewed numerous vehicles on his 2013-established YouTube channel, but here are some of the coolest he’s given credence to in 2023.
The Fastest Time Was Set By A Modified Corvette Grand Sport
Doug DeMuro brought his prized Porsche Carrera GT and his Ford GT. Sam Weisman brought his 981 Porsche Boxster Spyder, whereas Kennan Rolsen and Nick Roshon showed up with an E39 BMW M5 and a Lamborghini Murcielago respectively. Doug tries to convince everyone that his Carrera GT has a Formula 1 engine, but Kennan quickly corrects him by reminding him that the engine was initially designed for Formula 1, but it was then repurposed for Le Mans.
As far as track experience goes, neither of them has any apart from the parade lap that they’ve done and Sam’s brief period at the Porsche Experience Center. The group agreed that they would aim for around a 2-minute lap time. Doug explained that there are a few benchmark lap times, such as the 1:51:91 done by a modified Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport and a 2-minute flat time done by an Alfa Romeo Giulia QV.
The Murcielago Is Too Big And Heavy To Set A Fast Lap Time
- Nick was the first one to set a lap time, but Doug states that Nick was too insistent that he would set a 2-minute lap time.
- This is an impressive time, but none of them believe that he’s capable of doing it.
- One of the problems with the Murcielago is that it’s such a big, heavy car, with steel brakes, and it’s obvious that it’s not going to hit the 2-minute mark.
Nick’s first lap was 2:16:72, which Doug believes will be his fastest time because the Lamborghini will start running hot, and the brakes will start fading. Doug predicted that Sam would be the fastest driver of the day, followed by himself, and then Nick. Nick had a lot of trouble with his brakes during the second lap as he battled for traction in the heavy Italian supercar; however, he managed a lap time of 2:16:73. Ultimately, his quickest lap time was the final lap at 2:14:95.

Doug Sets A 2:18:38 Lap Time In The Carrera GT
Race Track Key Takeaways
- Despite having the faster car, Doug set a slower lap time than Nick.
- Braking at the first cone is too conservative.
- Following track lines will help set quicker times.
Doug took the Carrera GT out and his first lap had a decent time of 2:19:21, followed by 2:20:39 during the second lap. According to Nick, the reason he had a quicker time is that he studied track lines on YouTube. However, Doug smashes his previous lap times with a final lap time of 2:18:38, but it’s still significantly slower than the Lamborghini.
Nick explains that looking at the cones will help with braking, as you shouldn’t be applying the brakes before the fourth cone. However, he also points out that this also depends on how much you can trust your brakes, but braking at the first cone is too conservative, and this will hurt the lap time.

The second lap decreased to a time of 2:45:22; however, this quickly increased to a third lap time of 3:06:14, then decreased once again to a time of 2:40:59. Despite driving one of the best four-door sedans ever made, Kennan would rather take his time around the track listening to jazz than to engage in spirited driving.
The Porsche Boxster Spyder 981 Is The Quickest Of The Day
Key Takeaways
- The Porsche Boxster Spyder was the quickest car of the day.
- Doug beat the Carrera GT’s time by four seconds in the Ford GT.
- Power doesn’t guarantee quicker lap times.
Sam took his 981 Boxster Spyder out, and he managed to set a good first lap of 2:13:56. This time continued to decrease with a second lap time of 2:12:91, which was followed by a slightly slower 2:13:65 on the third lap. Sam’s fourth lap saw a time of 2:11:44, followed by a final lap time of 2:10:54. Once Doug took the Ford GT onto the track, Sam expressed his concern, as Doug is competitive and was driving a very powerful car with no traction control.

Doug’s first lap in the Ford GT came in at 2:22:19, with a second lap time of 2:18:45, which also sounded incredible. The third lap was even quicker, with a time of 2:16:76, with a quicker fourth lap of 2:15:88. The final lap saw Doug do everything he could, and this gifted him a time of 2:14:45. Despite having two of the most powerful cars on the track, Doug was unable to beat the Boxster’s time of 2:10:54, which proves that power doesn’t guarantee quick lap times.
