KTM has unleashed a new Beast, and it is bigger and more powerful than the Beasts that came before. The 2024 KTM 1390 Super Duke R Evo is the latest iteration of the Super Duke line that started in 2007 with the 990.

The 1390 replaces the 1290 Duke R Evo that had been around since 2013. For those who are not overly familiar with KTM’s way of doing things, the Super Duke 1290 had a 1301cc engine, while the 1390 has 1350cc – an increase of 49cc. This slight increase in volume translates into a significant increase in horsepower, mainly due to improvements in the cams and valve lift, as well as increased air intake.

The same unconventional spirit that guided the numbering system is also responsible for the design of the Super Duke. The nickname ‘Beast’ is no accident. The new Super Duke is subjectively ugly, but in the same way, a Pitbull is ugly. This motorcycle is all hunched-up aggression waiting to be unleashed. The 1390 Super Duke is a sinister naked street motorcycle in the true sense of the term. There is nothing superfluous about it, no little extra bits or features. Every part of this motorcycle is there to make it go faster, power through curves with more confidence, corner harder, and stop faster.

The engine is a V-twin with liquid cooling, there are six gears, and the final drive is via a chain. It is a compact motorcycle. The tank is a prominent hump, the seat and handlebars are low. The exhausts are graceless and industrial-looking, while the headlight is – Striking? Distinctive?

While the 2024 KTM 1390 Super Duke is an exceptional machine, a true street brawler, most bikers would prefer to ride normally most of the time. To this end, the motorcycle is economically designed, with a low seat and low bars providing a comfortable forward-leaning ride. The wild engine also makes enough low-end torque to burble along on a Sunday.

The 1350cc engine is 49cc bigger than the previous 1290 model, and this was achieved by increasing the bore from 108mm to 110mm. The 71mm stroke remains the same. Despite the modest increase in displacement, power is increased to 187.7hp and torque to 106.9 lb-ft. This is in line with the power over torque profile of the Super Duke.

Much of this power increase is due to the new cylinder heads and cam-shift system that lets the engine switch between two inlet profiles in different parts of the rev range. The ram air system has been redesigned for more direct airflow, and the 10 liters of air capacity gives the Beast the oxygen it needs at full roar.

The throttle bodies are wider at 60mm, with different top-feed injectors for improved fuel atomization. The power now peaks at 500rpm higher than before. The transmission is still the same, although the gear ratios have been changed in line with the new power curve.

This new Beast uses the same steel tube chassis as the previous model and uses the engine as part of the structure to increase torsional rigidity. The frame tubes have a wider diameter but thinner walls to optimize strength vs weight.

The suspension is new, with the third-generation WP semi-active technology. This has electronically controlled magnetic valves for variable damping that provide a wide range of adjustability, either manually or automatically. These adjustments range from maximum comfort to track-ready stiffness and support.

There are five standard modes.

• Auto – Auto mode adjusts the settings to the weight carried and the speed.
• Comfort – Comfort mode sets the suspension to soft/firm.
• Rain – Rain mode, also known as wuss mode, gives maximum traction and limits the power to 130hp.
• Street – Street mode is the default, with full power, traction control, limited front wheel lift, as well as easy throttle response.
